The Skin You’re In: More Amazing Than You Think!

June is Beautiful In Your Skin Month, making it the perfect time to celebrate one of the most extraordinary parts of the human body—your skin.

Most of us spend far more time looking at our skin than actually thinking about it. Yet this incredible organ is working 24 hours a day to protect, regulate, repair and communicate with the world around us.

In fact, your skin is the largest organ of the body, covering approximately 1.7 to 1.9 square metres. To put that into perspective, if you could lay all your skin flat, it would cover an area roughly the size of a single bed mattress or a small dining table!

It also weighs between 2.3 and 3.2 kilograms—about the same as carrying around a large bag of potatoes every day.

Not bad for something we often take for granted.

A Living, Breathing Suit of Armour

Although skin appears simple from the outside, it is actually made up of three distinct layers:

Epidermis

This is the visible outer layer that we see in the mirror. It contains specialised cells called keratinocytes that produce keratin, the protein that helps keep skin strong and resilient.

Interestingly, the epidermis is avascular, meaning it has no direct blood supply of its own.

Dermis

Beneath the epidermis lies the dermis, rich in blood vessels, nerves, collagen and elastin fibres that provide strength, flexibility and nourishment.

Hypodermis (Subcutaneous Layer)

This deeper layer contains connective tissue and fat that cushions, insulates and protects the body.

Together, these three layers create an incredibly sophisticated system that is both strong and surprisingly delicate.

Your Skin Has Superpowers

One way to remember some of the skin’s key jobs is the word:

SHAPES

S – Secretion
Your skin produces sebum, a natural oil that helps moisturise and protect the skin.

H – Heat Regulation
When you’re too hot, your skin helps cool you through sweating and changes in blood flow.

A – Absorption
While skin is largely waterproof, certain smaller molecules can penetrate it. This is why carefully selected essential oils and therapeutic skincare products can be absorbed and utilised by the body.

P – Protection
Your skin acts as a protective barrier against bacteria, toxins, pollutants and dehydration. Its slightly acidic surface, known as the acid mantle, helps defend against harmful microorganisms.

E – Excretion
Sweat helps remove certain waste products from the body while supporting temperature regulation.

S – Sensation
Every day your skin helps you experience touch, pressure, pain, warmth and cold through millions of sensory nerve endings.

Quite literally, your skin is your interface with the world.

Why Does Skin Change As We Age?

Many people begin to notice significant changes in their skin from around the age of 50 onwards.

Skin gradually becomes thinner and may take on a more delicate, paper-like appearance. This happens because collagen and elastin production naturally slow down, while moisture retention decreases.

However, ageing is only part of the story.

Several lifestyle and environmental factors can accelerate skin ageing:

  • Excessive sun exposure and UV radiation
  • Harsh winds and environmental pollutants
  • Repeated exposure to heating and air conditioning
  • Smoking
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Poor nutrition
  • Dehydration
  • Chronic stress

The good news? Many of these influences can be reduced or balanced through healthy lifestyle choices and regular skin care.

The Stress-Skin Connection

Have you ever noticed that your skin seems to react when you’re under pressure?

That’s not your imagination.

When we experience ongoing stress, the body shifts into the familiar fight, flight or freeze response. Stress hormones become elevated, and resources are redirected away from repair and maintenance processes.

In simple terms, the body becomes more focused on survival than healing.

As a result:

  • Skin may become more sensitive
  • Inflammation can increase
  • Healing may slow down
  • Allergic reactions can become more frequent
  • Complexion may appear dull or tired

This is one reason why relaxation therapies, facial treatments and self-care practices often produce visible improvements in the skin as well as improvements in how we feel.

The Missing Ingredient I See Most Often

One of the most common issues I observe in clients is a significant reduction in skin hydration.

Many people use good skincare products, yet their skin still appears dry, tired or lacking vitality.

Healthy skin cells need water, nourishment and stimulation to function optimally. As hydration levels improve, the skin often becomes:

  • ✓ More supple
  • ✓ More elastic
  • ✓ Better able to retain moisture
  • ✓ More radiant in appearance
  • ✓ Better supported in collagen and elastin production

Think of hydration as one of the foundations of healthy ageing.

Why Professional Facials Make Such A Difference

A professional facial is far more than a luxury treatment.

Regular facial therapies help support:

  • Deep hydration
  • Improved circulation
  • Detoxification
  • Skin nourishment
  • Relaxation of facial tension
  • Enhanced skin tone and texture
  • Support for healthy collagen and elastin production

Just as we service our cars and maintain our homes, our skin benefits from regular professional care too.

A Few Words Of Wisdom About Skin

“Healthy skin is a reflection of overall wellness.”

“Invest in your skin. It is going to represent you for a very long time.” — Linden Tyler

“Your skin tells a story. Make sure it’s one of care, nourishment and kindness.”

And one of my personal favourites:

“Great skin doesn’t happen by chance; it happens by appointment.”

Perhaps slightly tongue-in-cheek—but there is definitely some truth in it!
