The Skin You’re In: More Amazing Than You Think!

June is Beautiful In Your Skin Month, making it the perfect time to celebrate one of the most extraordinary parts of the human body—your skin.

Most of us spend far more time looking at our skin than actually thinking about it. Yet this incredible organ is working 24 hours a day to protect, regulate, repair and communicate with the world around us.

In fact, your skin is the largest organ of the body, covering approximately 1.7 to 1.9 square metres. To put that into perspective, if you could lay all your skin flat, it would cover an area roughly the size of a single bed mattress or a small dining table!

It also weighs between 2.3 and 3.2 kilograms—about the same as carrying around a large bag of potatoes every day.

Not bad for something we often take for granted.

A Living, Breathing Suit of Armour

Although skin appears simple from the outside, it is actually made up of three distinct layers:

Epidermis

This is the visible outer layer that we see in the mirror. It contains specialised cells called keratinocytes that produce keratin, the protein that helps keep skin strong and resilient.

Interestingly, the epidermis is avascular, meaning it has no direct blood supply of its own.

Dermis

Beneath the epidermis lies the dermis, rich in blood vessels, nerves, collagen and elastin fibres that provide strength, flexibility and nourishment.

Hypodermis (Subcutaneous Layer)

This deeper layer contains connective tissue and fat that cushions, insulates and protects the body.

Together, these three layers create an incredibly sophisticated system that is both strong and surprisingly delicate.

Your Skin Has Superpowers

One way to remember some of the skin’s key jobs is the word:

SHAPES

S – Secretion
Your skin produces sebum, a natural oil that helps moisturise and protect the skin.

H – Heat Regulation
When you’re too hot, your skin helps cool you through sweating and changes in blood flow.

A – Absorption
While skin is largely waterproof, certain smaller molecules can penetrate it. This is why carefully selected essential oils and therapeutic skincare products can be absorbed and utilised by the body.

P – Protection
Your skin acts as a protective barrier against bacteria, toxins, pollutants and dehydration. Its slightly acidic surface, known as the acid mantle, helps defend against harmful microorganisms.

E – Excretion
Sweat helps remove certain waste products from the body while supporting temperature regulation.

S – Sensation
Every day your skin helps you experience touch, pressure, pain, warmth and cold through millions of sensory nerve endings.

Quite literally, your skin is your interface with the world.

Why Does Skin Change As We Age?

Many people begin to notice significant changes in their skin from around the age of 50 onwards.

Skin gradually becomes thinner and may take on a more delicate, paper-like appearance. This happens because collagen and elastin production naturally slow down, while moisture retention decreases.

However, ageing is only part of the story.

Several lifestyle and environmental factors can accelerate skin ageing:

Excessive sun exposure and UV radiation

Harsh winds and environmental pollutants

Repeated exposure to heating and air conditioning

Smoking

Excessive alcohol consumption

Poor nutrition

Dehydration

Chronic stress

The good news? Many of these influences can be reduced or balanced through healthy lifestyle choices and regular skin care.

The Stress-Skin Connection

Have you ever noticed that your skin seems to react when you’re under pressure?

That’s not your imagination.

When we experience ongoing stress, the body shifts into the familiar fight, flight or freeze response. Stress hormones become elevated, and resources are redirected away from repair and maintenance processes.

In simple terms, the body becomes more focused on survival than healing.

As a result:

Skin may become more sensitive

Inflammation can increase

Healing may slow down

Allergic reactions can become more frequent

Complexion may appear dull or tired

This is one reason why relaxation therapies, facial treatments and self-care practices often produce visible improvements in the skin as well as improvements in how we feel.

The Missing Ingredient I See Most Often

One of the most common issues I observe in clients is a significant reduction in skin hydration.

Many people use good skincare products, yet their skin still appears dry, tired or lacking vitality.

Healthy skin cells need water, nourishment and stimulation to function optimally. As hydration levels improve, the skin often becomes:

✓ More supple

✓ More elastic

✓ Better able to retain moisture

✓ More radiant in appearance

✓ Better supported in collagen and elastin production

Think of hydration as one of the foundations of healthy ageing.

Why Professional Facials Make Such A Difference

A professional facial is far more than a luxury treatment.

Regular facial therapies help support:

Deep hydration

Improved circulation

Detoxification

Skin nourishment

Relaxation of facial tension

Enhanced skin tone and texture

Support for healthy collagen and elastin production

Just as we service our cars and maintain our homes, our skin benefits from regular professional care too.

At MindBody Oasis, treatments are designed not only to enhance appearance but also to support wellbeing and relaxation.

Our facial therapies include:

A Few Words Of Wisdom About Skin

“Healthy skin is a reflection of overall wellness.”

“Invest in your skin. It is going to represent you for a very long time.” — Linden Tyler

“Your skin tells a story. Make sure it’s one of care, nourishment and kindness.”

And one of my personal favourites:

“Great skin doesn’t happen by chance; it happens by appointment.”

Perhaps slightly tongue-in-cheek—but there is definitely some truth in it!

It's understandable that the face has taken centre stage for so long. But let's give our bodies a bit of TLC too, especially as we look to the warmer months and put our bodies on display. This article explains what body skincare is, how and why the body skin ages and what we can do about it with the latest in revolutionary skincare, featuring patented ageLOC gene-based therapy and Galvanic Spa (microcurrent) technology.

Skincare doesn’t stop at the neck. Looking after your body’s skin health is a major trend for 2023.

The face has received a lot of attention in terms skincare over the past few decades. And that’s understandable given that it’s the one area that is exposed all year round and is the most upfront feature of a person. Typical face care products include moisturisers, serums, creams, masks, peels, cleansers and toners.

Body skincare, in comparison, gets a poor look-in. Whilst admittedly, the body doesn’t get as much exposure as the face, very few people give it the attention and pampering it deserves or needs. As a reflexologist and massage therapist I see this all the time: dry, calloused, leathery skin, grey or lack-lustre skin tone, pimply imperfections or acne, pockmarks, stretch marks (from pregnancy or rapid weight loss), scar tissue, sagging flesh and wrinkling. Whilst nutrition, exercise and quality of sleep have a role to play in the health of skin, many do not take the time during or after showering or bathing to exfoliate, moisturise and condition their body skin.

What is Body Skincare?

Body skincare refers to the practices and products used to maintain the health and appearance of the skin on the body, as opposed to the face. This can include things like exfoliation, moisturisation, and the use of body lotions, scrubs, and oils. It is important to use gentle, non-irritating products on the body, and to pay attention to any changes in the condition of the skin, such as dryness or irritation.

According to Boscia, co-founder Lan Belinky, the company conducted a survey and “found 40% of adults were starting to feel like having a body care routine was as important as having a skincare routine”. TikTok has contributed to the rise in popularity of body skincare, with brands like Truly getting over 61 million likes advertising its body care products.

The Process of Ageing

There is both an internal and an external process to ageing.

Internal Ageing

Internally, after the age of 20, the dermis – the layer below the skin’s surface (epidermis) produces 1% less collagen per year. According to RCA’s Clinical Director Dr Garry Cussell, “The collagen and elastin fibres become thinner and looser as we age, which means the skin is less elastic, which eventually causes wrinkling and sagging”.

An important part of skincare is exfoliation. Whilst your body does shed 500 million dead skin cells every day, your body’s ability to self-exfoliate declines as you age. In our twenties, the exfoliation process decreases by 28%. And in our thirties, gradually less moisture is transferred from the dermis to the epidermis and fat cells begin to shrink, making the skin look dull and thin. By the time we reach our forties, collagen production is reduced significantly. Collagen and elastin fibres break and lose elasticity. And in our fifties, our sebaceous glands reduce in size, causing the skin to dry out and become more prone to bruising.

And for women going through the perimenopause, a rapid drop in oestrogen levels causes the skin to dry out and sag more. This is because oestrogen helps the skin produce oil and retain water. Furthermore, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, collagen drops 30% in the first 5 years of (peri)menopause, then approximately another 2% each year for the next 20 or so years.

External Ageing

This is the ageing that occurs as a result of environmental and lifestyle factors. Two of the biggest external causes of skincare ageing are smoking and excessive sun exposure.

Smoking causes the blood vessels in the epidermis to constrict. Decreased blood flow means less oxygen and fewer nutrients are transported to the skin cells. This in turn causes the skin to lose hydration, be more prone to free radical damage and eventually cause collagen and elastin fibres to deteriorate. The end results are sallow, sagging skin with greater wrinkling.

As far as exposure to the sun is concerned, UV (ultraviolet) radiation damages the DNA molecules of the skin causing premature ageing and activates the pigmentation process (triggering melanocytes to produce the pigment called melanin). The latter leads to freckles, sun spots and uneven skin tone. And of course, there is always the danger of skin cancer.

The ageLOC Difference

ageLOC is a patented gene-based approach to combatting the neglect and ageing of body skin. It is delivered as a gel to the skin by means of a Galvanic Body Spa (a microcurrent hand-held device) for deeper penetration and impact. The combined results are immediate and impressive.

You can expect the following benefits:

Minimisation and smoothing of the appearance of fat and cellulite for a slimmer, contoured appearance.

A smoothing out of dimpled areas and stretch marks.

Improvements in the appearance of skin’s firmness for a more youthful look.

Strengthening of the extracellular matrix (ECM) of the skin to help build and maintain healthy looking skin.

Moisture boost and purification of the skin – reducing the visible signs of ageing.

General enhancement in the skin’s overall appearance.

The Body Contouring Process

Exfoliation of skin using Liquid Body Lufra, comprising of finely ground walnut shells, to buff out rough spots and improve cell turnover.

Apply ageLOC Body Shaping Gel using the Galvanic Body Spa – depending on size and number of areas to be treated – this could be between 5-20 minutes.

Massage into the treated areas Dermatic Effects – a cream which has hibiscus and honey extracts. This is designed to amplify the results of the ageLOC Galvanic Spa treatment.

✅ It inhibits fat production and stimulate fat breakdown 👌🏻

✅ It prevents the appearance of cellulite and aging skin 💃

✅ An 8-week clinical study showed a 55% reduction in the appearance of cellulite 👍🏻

✅ 84% increase in moisture content 💦

✅ 37% improvement in skin firmness 💪🏻

✅ 69% enhancement in skin smoothness 🙌🏻

Now you can access this treatment in a really flexible and affordable way. Simply choose between 2 body shaping treatment packages (memberships) – 2 treatments per month at £60 or 4 treatments per month at £100 (a saving of £20). With the latter membership you can intensify treatment of one area or choose to target more than one area (perhaps in a double back-to-back session). It’s recommended that each area is treated a minimum of 4 times (with best results spanning 8 sessions). The more frequent the sessions, the more immediate the impact.
